Privacy policy

Chutemap is made by Gustaf Müller, Alte Gockhauserstrasse 6, 8044 Gockhausen (Zurich), Switzerland ("we"). Contact: support@chutemap.com. This policy explains what data the Chutemap app uses and why.
The short version
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and we never sell data.
- Your location is used on your phone to show you on the map and to record routes.
- Your adventures stay on your phone unless you create an account to sync them.
- You can delete your account and everything stored in it from inside the app.
Location
With your permission the app uses your phone's precise location to show your position and, while you record, to save your track. If you allow "Always", recording continues while the screen is off. Location is not sent to us unless you save a recorded adventure to your account.
Adventures stored on your device
Recorded and imported routes, waypoints and settings are stored on your phone. Adventures are saved as files that are included in your iCloud/device backup and visible in the Files app.
Account and sync (optional)
If you create an account we store your email address, a hashed password and the adventures you sync (name, activity type, track with timestamps, notes). This lets you use them on several devices. Data is stored with our hosting provider Supabase, Ireland (EU). Legal basis: performance of our contract with you (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)).
You can delete your account in the app under Profile → Settings → Delete account. This removes your account and all adventures stored in it from our servers immediately; copies on your phone are kept until you delete them.
Map and data services
To show maps the app downloads map tiles and data directly from the providers below. Like any website, these providers receive your IP address and which map area is requested; they do not receive your account or recorded tracks.
- Satellite imagery: Esri (ArcGIS)
- Winter imagery: Microsoft Planetary Computer
- Terrain: Mapterhorn
- Base map and labels: OpenFreeMap
- Topographic maps: OpenTopoMap, swisstopo, basemap.at, BKG, IGN France, IGN España, Kartverket, USGS
- Snow cover: NASA GIBS; snowfall: Open-Meteo (receives the coordinates of the map area)
- Place search and place names: Photon by komoot (receives your search text and the map centre)
- Route suggestions: Waymarked Trails (receives the map area)
- Ski tour descriptions: camptocamp.org, fetched through our own server (camptocamp does not receive your IP address)
How long we keep data
Account data is kept until you delete your account. Server backups, where they exist, are overwritten within 30 days.
Your rights
You can access, correct, export (GPX) and delete your data, and you may object to or restrict processing. Contact us at support@chutemap.com. You can also complain to a data protection authority — in Switzerland the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), in the EU/EEA the authority of your country.
Applicable law
We process personal data in line with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, for users in the EU/EEA, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Children
Chutemap is not directed at children under 13, and accounts are not intended for them.

We will update this page when the app's use of data changes and show the date above.
